Once search engines have determined the list of pages that (might) have content relevant to a user’s search query, they need to determine a way to present these pages in a way that is most relevant. Undoubtedly, the specific content on the pages plays a large part in this ranking. However, given that many pages might be similarly relevant, search engines do attempt to use a measure each page’s authority in preparing the final list.

One way they do this, is borrowed from the ‘citations’ system used in academia and in business. In this way, pages that are reference more often, by other highly ranked pages, will perform better. Search engines measure these ‘citations’ by analysing the inbound links to a specific page and website. Today though, the link analysis goes a little bit further than just counting the sheer number of links to a page. Not all links are considered equally relevant. For example, a link to a page on ‘tourist attractions in London’ from a UK government website will be considered more highly than a link to the same page from a lesser authority.

The few technical details that are known are beyond the scope of this article, but it is important to note that to successfully optimize your website for SERPs, you need not just a large quantity of inbound links, but to also have them from fairly relevant websites and pages. That said, links from non-relevant pages are still believed to be positively beneficial to the target site, although this will differ markedly from one search engine to the next.

Besides the authority of the linking site, search engines now also analyse the linking text itself. Also known as the anchor text, a link to a site using a relevant term will be more beneficial than one using a semantically unrelated one. For example a link to a tourist site using the term “attractions in London” will be more beneficial to the target site than just one that reads “Click here”.

There have been numerous attempts to game the system, but anyone serious about SEO, should realise that 10,000 links to a site, all reading “attractions in London”, with few other semantically relevant links is unlikely to look natural, and could well be penalised by the search engines.

Evidence too exists, that search engines will evaluate not just the anchor text linking to a page, but also analyse the content immediately surrounding the link. Therefore, creating thousands of links with the anchor text “attractions in London”, on pages with content that is not semantically related is unlikely to be beneficial for too long, especially if this is overdone.

At this point, it must be stressed that the search engines are always improving their algorithms. One of the reasons for this is to improve the quality of their results, and another is to punish and penalize sites that try to game the system. So, while SEO remains an inexact science in a continually moving field, keeping abreast of the general trends in search engine algorithms will help you improve your site’s performance in SERPs while at the same time avoiding being penalized.

First of all, avoid using a lot of flash and other such scripts on the website. From my personal point of view, this is one of the biggest SEO errors that beginners tend to make commonly. Several website owners would try all they can in order to get a website that is too appealing with the help of flash pages; sadly, they are not optimized and search engines will not crawl them. Since there will not be much content on your site’s loading page for the search engines to crawl and index it, they would not really care about it and rank it too slowly. Although with the use of flash your website can surely become appealing but at the same time make use of graphics and text as well that is optimized so the search engines to read it and index it.

Secondly, when you have images on your website; do not forget to put ALT tags on them. Basically these ALT tags were made so the images that are hard or cannot be accessible due to the poor net connections can be worked out. Although we have a lot better internet connections today but it is always wise to make use of ALT tags so your SEO outcomes can be much better. ALT tags should also have some keywords in them since both the search engine crawls and human beings will be reading them.

Another common mistake that a lot of people make is filling up the content with too many keywords. Although keyword strategy works the best when trying to make the most out of your SEO but another problem that arises is you might get in to a mess when using too much of these in your content. The search engines are a lot wiser today and their robots might decrease your ranking rather than increasing it considering the fact that all you have are keywords. Additionally, your audience would also have a clue that your content is purely made for search engines and not them therefore they will not be coming back again.

Lastly, avoid stealing content from other websites; being a copycat will not get you anywhere. Copying content might not get noticed by a few people but several visitors do catch it easily. Also, search engine robots can also recognize the original content and the duplicate one. You might copy the best content but it will not get you a better ranking ever.

The science of information retrieval continues to be a fast moving field of study. Although extant since the middle of the last century, but often confined to libraries and research facilities, the increasing importance of search engines has brought this science to the fore. The majority of search engines work on two broad principles to deliver the best results to users. These are relevance and importance. Importance, is broadly determined by analysing the number and quality of references (links on other websites) to a page on the internet. Determining relevance relies on fairly sophisticated semantic analysis of a document’s (web page) content by the search engine’s crawlers and robots.

In analysing the documents, the search engines will try and find the important terms (from the user’s query), in the various areas of the document. Chief amongst these areas, will be the page’s meta data, the title, the various headings as well as the main body of the text. Additionally they all attempt to place a value on the quality of the document based on their specific algorithms.

Unfortunately, the spoken language is not simple, and while a word or term can mean many different things, so too can many different terms mean one thing. As a consequence, search engines today employ semantic connectivity analysis as well. This is the analysis of terms that are commonly associated with each other. For example, anyone seeing the phrase “union jack” will associate it with Britain, and not the US. Each search engine will have its own thesaurus built over continued analysis of users’ habits, and continually being updated.

Search engines are ultimately machines, and while they do not ‘speak’ the language, they use a number of different scientific techniques to approximate an understanding of how the human brain works, and what the intention of the users searching through their pages is. An example is a search engine that might associate the word ‘physician’ with ‘doctor’. In this way, a page using the phrase ‘doctor’ might still be returned to the user even where they have used the search term ‘physician’.

The majority of website owners will not have to bother with semantic analysis and optimisation, but anyone serious about gaining an advantage over the competition could well look into this, as an aid to improving certain areas of SEO performance. Examples include mixing a balanced amount of specific keywords along with their related semantic terms in a page to further improve its relevance. The specific algorithms and thesauruses used by the search engines are unknown, and the practice is largely a black art, but having an overview understanding of the principles behind it is useful for anyone keen on a finely honed SEO plan and strategy.

There are some factors depending on which your website’s search engine ranking gets decided; ‘keywords’ is the top factor in SEO that needs to your full focus. The popularity of your website depends on the keywords since the search engine crawlers will be looking and going over your chosen keywords plus your content while ranking you. You need to start off from what your content will be, what keywords will you choose, and how will you optimize them so everything becomes search engine friendly. Appropriate keywords selection is mandatory for SEO therefore this step cannot be overlooked.

You should not choose a single word only; usually people type in multiple words or phrases in the search engine boxes to find relevant websites. If there is someone searching for a family dog, he or she would type in ‘family dog’ rather than just dog; this means targeted keywords. You also need to reduce the bounce rate of your website that means the number of people coming and immediately leaving your website should be less. This means not only you will have to choose the right keywords that would lead people to your website but the content should be tempting enough that they stay and get interested.

Also, you need to come up with keywords that have lesser competition so you can easily make your way up in the rankings. Keyword research at this point becomes necessary; you can also take help from one of the several keyword research tools available. Stay more targeted rather than using common keywords where a lot more search results will be shown. If your website is about animal health; go for particular keywords such dog health or cat health etc rather than being common and putting in animal health.

You can also make use of various tools that will help you finding out keywords popularity about the keywords you are planning to choose. If the popularity is too much than make use of alternatives. Similarly, keyword density is highly important as well. You cannot just stuff your website content up with chosen keywords; you might get banned being spam or people would simply recognize your website as pure marketing and useless information. Be careful while using keywords and place them nicely so they blend in smoothly with your content. A reader should not be able to notice the keywords in your text and it should sound all natural and smooth.

Several online business owners today are searching for newer ways through which they can enhance their online business and make more profits. Although it is important that you keep a look out for any new techniques that can provide you with more profits but at the same time you also have to remember various basic strategies that always will work in online marketing. When we talk about the most basic requirement for an excellent optimized website; we are talking about quality SEO content. Your website will never rank well enough if this aspect of SEO is missing at any point.

There are various ways through which you can make sure that SEO content can really do your website some big favors. You will need to organize the content in such a manner that it becomes search engine friendly and at the same time visitors also find it interesting and informative to read. You SEO content will only carry quality if it fulfill both the requirements; being friendly to the search engines and the readers both.

Using the right keywords is the very first thing that will need your entire focus. At the same time they should be used at the right spots as well. Technically speaking; we refer to this as keyword prominence and keyword density. Such aspects play a very important role and you need to be very careful with these if you desire the best results from your online marketing. These are the alternations you need to make to your content; once your content carries quality and is optimized appropriately, you will see how your rank improves quickly in the search engines.

Keywords play a very important role in a website’s content. You cannot fill your articles and posts and other stuff up with keywords and at the same time you cannot leave them out as well. Also, your headers, titles, and descriptions about various content should also contain keywords in the right manner. Make sure that you do not put your entire focus over keywords otherwise your content might end up being useless for the readers. The keywords should go well with the rest of the content and the readers should not feel at any point that your content is purely for online marketing and business and not for providing them with quality information. Focusing on these aspects will make sure that your SEO content is of top quality.

It cannot be emphasized enough that what a human visitor to your site, and what a search engine’s robot will see are very different indeed. Human visitors will generally see what is displayed by their browsers, while a search engine crawler will just see the raw HTML code that makes up the page. The various search engines continue to work on technology to reduce the difference between these two experiences, to ensure that they deliver their (human) visitors to the most relevant and most useful pages.

An obvious example is any images contained on a web page. A search engine will be able to detect that an image is going to be displayed to the site visitor. Usually though, they are unable to determine what the image itself is, except for what you might have used to describe it in the ‘alt’ and ‘title’ pages. That said, search engines are able to determine a lot of other attributes for the images. Image size, file size, image format and pixel colours are just some examples. The last attribute is used in many cases to determine whether a page might have pornographic content, by analysing the amount of flesh tone an image contains. Similarly, any text contained in the images is ignored. Although OCR software that can do this (with varying success rates) does exist, there is little evidence that it is being used (yet) by the search engines.

Historically, everybody ‘knew’ that search engines could not read any content in Flash files. As a result, Flash based sites tended to be penalized in SERPs, unless they jumped through several hoops to try and get around this. Increasingly though, search engines are beginning to extract information from such Flash based sites. That said, the success of these endeavours continues to be limited, as Flash is a very visual, pictorially heavy medium, and still requires the site designer to implement text alongside the Flash content that is actually delivered to the users. Most of the tags that are available in HTML text sites are largely still missing from Flash based sites.

Many pages now provide audio files, particularly for the new wave of podcasts. Some, particularly news sites, or product sites with demonstrations also provide video. As it is with images, the actual content of the audio and video files is often lost to the search engines. That said, like images, audio and video files do contain a lot of meta data, such as ID3 tags within MP3ss, that can be used to describe the content. In some cases podcasts in AAC format can be enhanced with textual content to show notes, images and often chapter markers. The efficacy of such tags is still being tested, and expanded and at the same time, the search engines are working on ever more novel ways to extract the content from such files.

One area that remains problematic is the use of AJAX, or asynchronous JavaScript. AJAX allows a page to retrieve content (typically from a database), and display it to a human visitor, without having to update or refresh the entire page. The problem is that often, the content is displayed only after some interaction with a human visitor, via a JavaScript ‘app’ running on the user’s own computer. It is entirely possible that what one visitor will see, will be totally different from what the next one will. As result, search engines cannot readily index such content.

In conclusion, although the use of the latest gee-whiz technology is touted by many bleeding edge web design firms, every website owner should have a firm grasp of how this can affect the way search engines view their site, and consequently, how the site will perform in SERPS. That said, knowing the limitations of the technology also allows you to work around it, in a way that does not hamper, but actually enhance your SEO efforts. A popular example, is including a transcript of a podcast on the page that has the MP3 file.

Two key components to any sound SEO campaign are proper link building and directory submissions. With link building and the submission of your site into directories you will be able to increase your web exposure, relevancy within the search engines and traffic.

Link building should be a major part of your SEO efforts. This task involves the practice of getting other websites to link to yours. The major search engines consider quality backlinks as being amongst the most important aspects to consider while determining the rank of a site. If you want to best promote your website with the search engines, you must build links.

The quality of the backlinks you obtain is very important. Search engines look favorably upon high quality links rather than giving credit to quantity. Why quality is more important than quantity is because dishonest webmasters and blog owners take part in techniques like cloaking, re-directing and adding hidden content into web pages. Quality back links help the search engines determine where your site will rank and it will also help them determine whether or not your site is relevant for a particular search being done.

This is where directory submissions can play an important role. It is important to remember that the search engines send out spiders to search the internet for new sites which appear daily. There is not an easier nor better way to let a search engine know that your site exists than through links to your site found in various directories. Directory links can give your site/blog a boost which can help tremendously with your SEO efforts. Considering the fact that the majority of directories allow you to provide a link with relevant keywords which describe your website, search engines can favor your site over others when ranking for certain terms.

Though most of the web directories are free to submit, submitting your website is a tedious process as you have to fill out scores of web forms and choose categories for your website/blog. However, a reputable directory submission service can be used like what is offered by Directory Maximizer wherein the work will be done for you. This service offers several submission options. You can have your site submitted to as many or as few directories as you wish. You also can choose to have the submissions slowed down to wherein they are spread out over a two to five week period. Alternatively, there is also the option of you subscribing your site to be submitted to 100 directories automatically every month. The lists of directories your site is submitted to will be tracked and recorded so you don’t have to worry about having your site submitted to the same directory more than once. Directory Maximizer is very affordable, it’s comprehensive and it takes the hassle out of getting your website or blog seen by the search engines.

Using the power of social bookmarking sites is also a great way of driving traffic to your website or blog. Bookmarking your blog or website with social bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, etc will allow your bookmarks to be viewed and shared by others. Not only will you see an increase in traffic but your blog/website will be put out there in front of millions of people which will help you in the branding of your business. And, if you have great content on your site/blog the chances are good that others will link to it which can help you obtain some relevant links.

Today, millions of internet users are using social bookmarking sites so that they can store, organize and manage websites that interest them on public bookmarking sites instead of storing these sites of interest on their computers. When you bookmark your sites with social bookmarking sites, you will automatically obtain access to potentially large numbers of people which visits sites like StumbleUpon, Reddit and Digg. As your bookmark is tagged by other users, its popularity increases wherein it moves to the front pages of the category or site. It’s rather straightforward and a very powerful way to get your website or blog recognized.

Social bookmarking is also a very time-consuming task. You have to create accounts at each site before manually submitting your page to them. This is good reason to use a service like Social Maximizer as the social bookmarking will be done for you. You need to only sign up for this service, enter the details of the page to be submitted, choose the number of social bookmarking sites you want your page submitted to, provide that url with your keywords, title and description and your submissions will be made.

Don’t underestimate the power of social bookmarking and directory submissions. Both have proven themselves to be very effective measures to take in getting your site recognized by the search engines and seen by potentially millions of web users.

It is important for anyone starting out in SEO to understand that what your site visitors see, and what the search engine crawlers see are two different things. Site visitors will see your displayed content, including images, and any JavaScript effects. Search engines on the other hand, just see the raw HTML that the page is made up from.

For an example of this, visit any website in your browser, and “View Source” to see what this HTML looks like. In Firefox, click on “View” in the menu, and then “Page Source. On Internet Explorer you can achieve the same by clicking on “View” on the menu, and then “Source”.

Since search engines cannot ‘see’ the images on your site, they rely on other descriptive or ‘meta’ tags to determine the content of such elements. In the case of images, the HTML tags used is ‘alt’. Originally, this tag was supposed to allow some ‘alternative’ text to be rendered when the image was not displayed, or when viewing it was not possible. This is often the case where users have disabled images for faster web surfing, when users are using a text only browser (such as Lynx), or when the site visitor is visually impaired. The last case is one of the reasons why this tag continues to be used extensively, even where SEO is not a consideration (for example in corporate intranets and extranets). Additionally, an image can also have a “title” tag, used more to label the image than to describe it.

Another tag that is increasing playing an important role on the internet is the ‘noscript’ tag. Similar to images, the search engine crawlers will not try to interpret and therefore ‘experience’ any JavaScript affects you might have on the page. It must be noted that this is changing however, as more and more websites use JavaScript to enrich their user experiences. Additionally, a small percentage of users also have JavaScript disabled by default as they surf the internet. The ‘noscript’ tag therefore just displays alternative content when JavaScript is turned off by the user, or when the search engine robots are crawling the pages.

In many cases, web designers use the no script tag with text to the effect of “Your browser does not support JavaScript!” or “Please enable JavaScript and then refresh the page”, to prompt site visitors to enable JavaScript in their browsers before viewing the pages. That said, this ‘noscript’ tag can contain other text, although it really should only be used to represent the content of the JavaScript. Attempting to use this tag to fool the search engine with unrelated content could be viewed as spamming, leading to penalization of your site.

While there will be elements on visually rich pages that search engine robots cannot see, there are still SEO techniques you can employ to improve your pages’ SERP performance. So, even if your pages are image rich, judicious use of the ‘alt’ and ‘title’ tags will help search engines better understand their content. The same holds for JavaScript, although the warnings about not abusing either the ‘alt’ or ‘noscript’ tags to avoid being penalized should still be heeded.

SEO or search engine optimization can be said as the art through which you can get your website in the top rankings of the search engines; Google being the best one. You can get a hold of literally thousands of blog posts and web pages that will tell you how to actually make this happen but are all of those tips and techniques true? The quantity of information out there is so vast that there are a lot of myths roaming around as well. I am briefing below the most common myths regarding SEO you need to be aware of.

Many people consider SEO to be a morally dark area. I have met several people who simply have assumed that SEO is morally not right somehow. Well, this cannot be true of course. However, there are techniques you can morally question upon but Google has been working really hard upon these issues with time. You can simply over look such techniques known more as Black Hats and stick to the ones that are known as White Hats. There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting your website under SEO and getting it optimized for Google. Generally speaking, SEO majorly involves brining new content over your site and making it easier to be found and navigate. Now what is wrong with making your website friendly to people and search engines?

Secondly, several people think that SEO can be finished. It is stupid when anyone tell me that he or she has finished SEO and the website is fully optimized now. Well, that is simply impossible and website optimization cannot be finished. SEO is a process that never stops and goes on. Certain steps can be finished off but generally speaking; links and fresh content is always needed by your website. So, search engine optimization is never finished this way. Your website needs to constantly updated; you are never done until and unless your website is at the very top in Google’s ranking and even then you need to maintain that spot through SEO.

Lastly, quit thinking that a SEO company that is abroad is the same as some local one. There are several foreign SEO companies offering a large variety of their services at high prices. Avoid these companies and go for the local ones. They are overseas, there is no accountability, what you would do if they do not work, you cannot visit their office, you cannot file any complaints; therefore, local SEO companies are far better.
